Grossmont High School
Valhalla High School
You knew it was going to be a special night. Last home game, 2 best teams in East County battling it our for the league title. Over 400 people in the stands. Standing room only, and the boys did not disappoint. Grossmont started out the scoring, up 1-0 early, and then 3-1 mid way thru the period, and they looked good. The Norsemen picked up a couple of late goals to end the period in a 3-3 draw. Second period saw Valhalla’s #1 player receive his second ejection, and had to be pulled from the game. I think Grossmont got a little excited seeing Higgie out of the game, but it was the rest of the Norsemen team that rose to the occasion. The Norsemen out scored the Foothillers 8-2 in the second period to close out the 1/2 with an 11-5 lead. Going into the 3rd period, things looked great for the Norsemen, however we seemed to relax a bit and the Foothillers rose way up to outscore the Norsemen 4-1 to close the gap to 12-9 at the end of 3. The fourth was an incredibly exciting quarter. Both teams supporters being so loud, the coaches couldn’t be heard in the game. The teams traded goals in the period, Grossmont winning the period out scoring the Norsemen 4-3, but feel just short, and when all the dust cleared the Norsemen secured their second consecutive league championship with a 15-13 Victory over the Foothillers. The Norsemen finish the season at 8-0 in league, and an impressive 25-5 overall record. The best record in San Diego County this year. Its off to the playoffs for both teams.
Outstanding players tonight, and there were a bunch, so will just go down the list in numerical order. Romero with 2 goals, 2 assists, 2, steals, and a field save. O’Carroll with 1 goal, 3 assists, ejection drawn, and a steal. Kueber with 4 goals, an ejection drawn, and a steal. Higginson with 3 goals, an assist, an ejection drawn and 2 steals. Stockwell with 3 goals, and an assist. Ramey with 2 assists, and a personal drawn, Nordquist with a goal, 5 steals, and 3 field blocks. Pyjar with 2 assists and a steal, French with a goal, 2 assists, an ejection drawn, 2 steals, and 3 field blocks. Sange and Cowles combined to make 9 saves in the game. An all around impressive win for the Norsemen. Player of the game was JD Stockwell who came into the game in the middle of the second period when the game was still close and led the charge for the Norsemen with a couple of goals in the 2nd period, leading the Norsemen who broke the game open in the second period with 8 goals.
